Our history

The Seafarers Hospital Society was founded in 1821 as the Seamen’s Hospital Society, by a group of philanthropists in response to the increasing number of homeless and impoverished seafarers living on the streets of London after the Napoleonic wars. Please help us to help seafarers and their families. Since 1821 the Seafarers Hospital Society has been helping seafarers and their families. Our role today is to support the health and welfare of seafarers by making grants to seafarers and to the maritime organisations that care for them.
