Tracing a Seafaring Ancestor
Was one of your ancestors treated by the Seafarers Hospital Society at the Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital?
The Seafarers Hospital Society is often contacted by people who are looking into their family history, and are trying to find out more about an ancestor who was treated at the Dreadnought Hospital in Greenwich.
Unfortunately, nearly all the Dreadnought records from before 1948 were destroyed when the hospital was bombed during the Second World War and many of those from 1948 to 1986 were lost.
Some records, mostly administrative, are available through the London Metropolitan Archive. Find out more at their website www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/lma
A few surviving clinical records together with an admission register are held at the National Maritime Museum. To find out more contact the manuscripts department on 020 8312 6516 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
