Confidential advice and support service for merchant seafarers
The Society has joined forces with the Big White Wall to provide a mental health and wellbeing advice and support service to UK-based merchant navy personnel who may be struggling to cope.
Big White Wall provides online support 24/7 in a safe, supportive and anonymous environment. Services include access to trained counsellors, a support network, self-help materials and one to one therapy.
Big White Wall is currently the major provider of online mental health services and is regulated and approved by the Care Quality Commission, with a CQC rating of ‘good’. They are highly respected and successful, running similar schemes in partnership with the NHS, universities, Armed Forces and local authorities. With funding from the Society, free support from Big White Wall is now available to any serving merchant navy seafarer based in the UK.

So far the majority of seafarers accessing the service have been using the information and self-help resources or chatting to like-minded people about their problems. But live therapy is also available – it’s just like conventional face to face therapy but it’s delivered online via webcam, audio or instant messaging. So if you want to see your therapist you can, but if you would prefer to talk without being seen that’s also possible.
